Santa’s Wish List
Winter coolness roundup 2003

As the first snowflakes of the year fall on the Midwest Test Facility, thoughts drift off toward peace on earth, jingle bells, chestnuts and reindeer. And, oh, yeah, there’s the giving and getting that characterize this season of cheer and joy. But let’s not beat around the bush and watch the woods fill up with snow – Christmas is coming and it’s time to get together that list of items you’ve been lusting after all year. So here it is, our twice-annual roundup of most-wanted items that you might like to add to your toy collection, or if you’re the giving type, perhaps one of these material things would make that computer user or gadget freak in your life bubble over with enthusiasm and gratitude.

Clean Keying: Ultra is Serious Magic
Best DV keying yet, astonishing moves, tracking features

Serious Magic’s Ultra ($795, formerly known as Ultra Key) is a very good stand-alone chromakey creation software package, making that often-tedious process easier and the results cleaner. The real fun starts, though, when you use Ultra to combine virtual sets – complete with 3D camera moves – with your green-screen shots. This powerful software gives your work a polished look that was previously unavailable without motion control cameras and a stack of editing and effects paraphernalia that would cost you more than a large house. Here’s our review.

Auto Orient
Faking 3D with 2D layers in After Effects

Having a swarm of particles flying around in your After Effects composition is one way to add a great deal of depth to a complex animation. However great Particle Playground may be, it is still a 2D generator. You can’t fly a camera around or through the emitter without the flatness becoming apparent. One alternative might be to create hundreds and hundreds of layers and position and animate them in 3D space. The drawback is that this is going to take a great deal of time. In the first of this three part exercise, we’ll lay the groundwork for creating a rotating cloud of particles that can either orbit another layer, or rotate around an AE camera creating an interesting swarm of particles.

Forecast 2004
Technology That Will Change the Way You Do Business

While the news in 2003 was dominated by stories of downsizing or even capsizing in the turbulent waters of a recessed market, technologies in the production and post fields kept hitting high notes. It was clear that innovation and quick productization would seriously change the way producers work. You had only to look at the significant developments in everything from ENG and electronic cinematography to new scanners and HD compression cards for PCs.

HD’s Growing, But How Fast?
It’s been a formative year for HDTV. While broadcasters struggle with implementation, Cablevision blasted out of the gate in October with a new DBS package, delivering 21 channels all in high-def. At the high end, HD has gained acceptance both as a mastering format for episodic TV and some video- and 16mm-originated features and as an acquisition format for sitcoms. We are in an awkward phase in the lifespan of the technology, the Mill Valley-based research company Trendwatch indicates.
