![]() Just a few of the many things we have to be thankful for It’s that time of year when those of us who live in the United States pause to give thanks for all that has been bestowed upon us in the past year. So, in keeping with this quaint custom, I decided to list the things digital video editors, and we here at Digital Media Net are thankful for. It’s been a good year for technology in general and video editing in particular. So, let the thanking begin! New power, compositing features for editors Discreet has introduced a new version of its high-end editing software, Smoke, now set to release as version 6 in January, 2004. Specially geared toward SGI’s new Tezro workstation, the software adds new features and improves upon its established set of editing tools. The big news is that the worlds of compositing and editing continue to blur, where once-difficult tasks are now made easy by software improvements and hardware enhancements. Here’s a first look. ![]() Monitor calibration seem to be crawling all over the place? Check out this new tool called the "Calibug". The Calibug is a USB drive that comes with all sorts of testing tools, generators, patterns, and instructions on how to calibrate a monitor. This small tool has everything you need to calibrate your monitor to match, with instruction on how to use it. ![]() On key and a cut above the rest I’m not an editor, so I didn’t know the shortcuts and the quick ins and outs of using Premiere. But then I ran across Bella Corporation’s EZ Keyboard products and I knew I needed to get one. These keyboards have color-coded keys that correspond to tools used in editing programs, and have the tool’s icon printed on them for easy reference. What better way to get around Premiere, short of kidnapping an editor and duct taping him to my desk (of course leaving one finger free for him to point to the right tool when I ask a question)? Simple effect and clever editing for dramatic transition It is always cool to see an effect you like, and even neater to break the effect down and figure out how to recreate it yourself. This week, we’ll use Adobe After Effects (4.1 or later) and some clever editing to create what I like to call The Super Zoom. |
