Editing HD on Premiere
CineForm Aspect HD makes it happen, even on a notebook

Now you can actually edit HD footage on a notebook. CineForm is shipping editing software, Aspect HD, that runs underneath an ordinary copy of Adobe Premiere 6.5. Using shots from the new HDV camcorder from JVC, I was able to capture compressed HD clips from a DVHS machine onto a notebook from 1Beyond, edit it in real time, and then place the edited sequence back onto HD tape. Even though the workflow was slightly awkward, the experience was thrilling and gave me a sneak peek at what's to come in the world of real time HD editing… for the rest of us.

DMN Interview: Part 2 -- Avid's Matt Allard
In part 2, Allard talks about Avid's competition

Here's part 2 of Charlie White's candid discussion with Matt Allard, Avid's product manager for DS and the Nitris line of products. Allard has been in the digital video editing business for many years, where he started out with Media 100, moved to Softimage in Montreal, and now finds himself back in Massachusetts at Avid's headquarters in Tewksbury. In part 2, Allard talks more about the challenges of creating 64-bit editing products for both Mac and PC, and the plight of competing companies like SGI, Discreet and Media 100.

Lighting 201 – Part 2: Negative Light
Using natural light on a cloudy day

As luck would have it, every single day I have had a chance to go outside and shoot it has been a cloudy day. Previously I had said this lesson would cover lighting the subject outdoors. Without the Sun, what kind of lesson can we have? Put away those negative thoughts, because this is the perfect opportunity to discuss Negative Lights.

Express Your Flare
Working with Light Factory and expressions in Adobe After Effects

If you've ever introduced a lens flare into your After Effects or Photoshop composition, chances are that you've used Knoll's Light Factory. By no means a new filter, Knoll Light Factory has remained the most widely used option for lens flares. But did you know that with After Effects' built-in expression tools, you can build up elements without heavy keyframe management? Well, you can.
