![]() Cost-effective editing: Do you need that new gizmo, or just want it? Here on Digital Media Net, we like to keep you informed about all the latest technology. Reading through our pages, you might think I would recommend that you get rid of the digital video editing software and hardware you are now using and write a check for that newest, shiniest editing system, that speedy new computer or that spectacular new software package. Well, step back with me for a minute and get some perspective on this. Are you comfortable with what you're using now? Are you getting the job done? Are you earning money with it? Broadcast veteran and Sony VP talks HDTV, Sony's new optical disc system Stephen E. Jacobs, veteran TV producer formerly with CBS News and now Senior Vice President of Sony Electronics' Broadcast & Production Systems Division talks with DMN's Charlie White. In part one of this wide-ranging interview, Jacobs talks about HDTV uptake among US broadcasters, and Sony's new Professional Optical Disc technology. Technology's Freed Compositors to Take on Some 3D, a Little Editing, and Color Correction...So Is Compositing a Pure Adrenaline Ride or One of the Most Demanding Jobs Around? What do compositors do? A lot. Of all the post-production disciplines, compositing has changed the fastest, grown the most and played an increasingly important role in creating the final look of many projects, especially TV spots. Moreover, compositors have begun taking on some of the functions performed by artists working in related areas like telecine, editorial, CG, 3D animation and visual effects. As a result, they have gained clout not only in how a project is finished, but in how it is produced. Compositing has been around for as long as moving images have. But in the last decade, compositors’ tools have become so powerful that their suite has turned into “post central” — the hot seat, if you will — where all those involved in a project, including the director, cinematographer, editor, CG artist, and (in advertising) the nervous agency creatives and wallet-watching clients, can and do converge to pass judgment on the finishing of the work. ![]() Excerpt from recent SCRI/DMN Pro DVD Survey According to the SCRI/DMN Pro DVD Report, b y the end of 2003, over nine out of ten pro video facilities will be engaged in DVD-authoring. Among video production and post facilities, penetration of DVD-authoring by the end of 2003 is expected to be almost complete. ![]() Part 2: Exploring color options for menu highlights using overlays Last week we took a look at most of the possibilities available for creating custom button highlights in DVD Studio Pro. The process involved creating highlights within each individual button in your menu, which is probably the better way to do it in most cases. But there is an alternate method, that of using overlays. So today we'll take a look at this method and also wrap up our discussion of customizing colors for menu- and button-based highlights. |
