The Hot Seat
Technology's Freed Compositors to Take on Some 3D, a Little Editing, and Color Correction...So Is Compositing a Pure Adrenaline Ride or One of the Most Demanding Jobs Around?

What do compositors do? A lot. Of all the post-production disciplines, compositing has changed the fastest, grown the most and played an increasingly important role in creating the final look of many projects, especially TV spots. Moreover, compositors have begun taking on some of the functions performed by artists working in related areas like telecine, editorial, CG, 3D animation and visual effects. As a result, they have gained clout not only in how a project is finished, but in how it is produced. Compositing has been around for as long as moving images have. But in the last decade, compositors’ tools have become so powerful that their suite has turned into “post central” — the hot seat, if you will — where all those involved in a project, including the director, cinematographer, editor, CG artist, and (in advertising) the nervous agency creatives and wallet-watching clients, can and do converge to pass judgment on the finishing of the work.

The process involved creating highlights within each individual button in your menu, which is probably the better way to do it in most cases. But there is an alternate method, that of using overlays. So today we'll take a look at this method and also wrap up our discussion of customizing colors for menu- and button-based highlights.
